3" Drain Pipe Slope FAQs
Code questions and fall calculations for 3" sanitary drainage piping.
Q1 What is the minimum slope for a 3" toilet drain pipe?
Under the IPC, 3-inch pipes are permitted a minimum slope of 1/8 inch per foot (1.04% grade). However, many local jurisdictions and master plumbers prefer 1/4 inch per foot (2.08%) when ceiling clearance allows to maintain maximum flushing velocity.
Q2 How much drop does a 3" drain pipe need over 50 feet?
At a 1/8" per foot slope, a 50-foot run requires a total drop of 6-1/4 inches (158.7 mm). At a 1/4" per foot slope, it requires 12-1/2 inches (317.5 mm).
